The genesis of the Petite Camargue

It is when the Rhône and the Durance united together to flow towards the south, that the power of the water formed the "Delta du Rhône". The Camargue was created in the middle of the delta, and to the west, the Petite Camargue.

The alternance of glaciations and the warming up of the atmosphere created variations in the sea level. These changes create dunes.

The drop in the water level brings about the formation of a lagoon separate from the sea by an offshore bar. This exchange of water with the sea is done by canals called "graus".

The river of the Petite Camargue (the Vistre or the Vidourle) supplies this lagoon with fresh water. The alluvions transported by these rivers partially invade the original pond to eventually create the "Etang de l'Or" and those of the Petite Camargue.
