Aigues-mortes possesses a rich historical past. Even today, the scars of the past are still visible.

Aigues-Mortes was once a royal port during the Crusades, even though the sea never approached its ramparts. At that period, the ships travelled by a canal that was dug through ponds to the sea.

Aigues-Mortes was also a state prison, symbol of intolerance and a privileged place of numerous bloody tragedies
